1. Question

손익계산서에 대해 설명하고, 주요 항목들에 대해 말해 보시오.

What is an income statement and what are the major line items on it?

2. Answer

손익계산서는 기업의 일정 회계연도의 영업성과를 나타내는 재무제표로, '수익'과 '비용'으로 구성되어 있다. 손익계산서는 매출액에서부터 시작하여 당기순이익까지 Top-down Approach 방식으로 구성되어 있다.

순서대로 살펴보면, 매출액에서 매출원가를 차감하여 매출총이익을 계산하고, 매출총이익에서 판관비와 기타 영업수익,비용을 가감하여 영업이익을 구한다. 영업이익에 다시 금융수익, 비용과 기타 영업 외 수익, 비용을 가감하여 법인세 차감 전 순이익을 도출하며, 법인세비용을 차감하여 당기순이익을 구하고, 이어서 주당이익까지 공시된다.

According to the approach, cost of goods sold (Cogs) is subtraced from sales to arrive at gross profit, and selling general and administrative expenses (SG&A) and other operating income and expenses are added or subtracted from gross profit to arrive at operating income (EBIT). Furthermore, financial income and expenses, and other non-operating income are added or subtracted from operating income to compute earnings before taxes, Lastly, income tax expenses are deducted from earnings before taxes to arrive at net income, which is used to calculate earnins per share (EPS).
